High on Sparta Mountain, at the head waters of the Weldon Brook, sits the coldest spot in Jefferson Township. At around 1,300 feet above sea level, this swampy area is consistently 5 to 10 degrees cooler then the valleys of the township, earning it the nickname of Jefferson's ice box. Even as all other township lakes and ponds have given up any feeble ice formed this winter, here in the highlands winter was able to stow some away with the chance an admiring public may stumble upon it after a long hike.
