Caption: As many people know, Thomas Edison has left a legacy in Jefferson Township and it was not born of one of his brilliant successes, but rather one of his few failures. Edison mined a low quality iron ore in a number of mines on Sparta Mountain in the late 1800’s and tried to concentrate it into a higher grade ore before shipping it over the Ogden Mine Railroad to points east. Around 1900 his venture was given up and the railroad abandoned in the 1930's. With the steel track removed during World War II, all that remains is the rail bed, now preserved as long trails in the Mahlon Dickerson Reserve. These are ideal trails as the hard work was done over 150 years ago when cuts through rock outcroppings were made and the grade no more than 4 % created. (PHOTO - ANTHONY LAWSON)
