Michael Acocella, 86, describes riding the steam locomotive his father Michael Sr., drove from Jersey City to Caldwell and back, carrying passengers and freight on the Erie Railroad, over the Pompton Avenue trestle, on the roadbed now used as the West Essex Trail.
Acocella 's lived his entire life on Bowden Road in Cedar Grove and with 37 years on the township's police force, retiring as Captain, he is a walking and talking history book of the life of the people and places in town.
